It is as if she is covered with a wedding veil in the spring, and in the fall, dropping the leaves, she puts on a multi-colored sundress, as it were: brushes, cast with vitreous skin, make the bush a living gem.

But the plant has become famous not only for its external attractiveness, viburnum has useful properties and contraindications, and which ones you will learn from our material.

    Botanical description

Viburnum ordinary or viburnum red, belongs to the genus Viburnum L, family Adoxaceae (Adoxaceae). Previously, the shrub belonged to the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae).

    • Variegated, with beautiful unusual color leaves.
    • Sterile, can only reproduce vegetatively.
    • Yellow-fruited, the berries are yellow in color, which is what distinguishes them from other types of viburnum.

What does the common viburnum look like, is it a tree or a shrub? The plant is a deciduous woody plant, the average height of which is 2-4 meters. The bark of a tree (or shrub) has a gray-brown color. The leaves are opposite, three to five lobed, 10 cm long, the upper part of the leaves is dark green, the lower part is gray-green and slightly pubescent along the veins.

When red viburnum blooms, its small (4-5 mm in diameter) yellowish-white flowers spread a pleasant delicate aroma. The flowers are collected in intricately arranged flat thyroid inflorescences. Flowering occurs from the end of May and throughout June, while the berries ripen in August-September. On the bushes they can be seen until the first snow, sometimes longer. The fruits of viburnum are bright red, almost spherical drupes.

The tree grows quickly, it grows by 30-40 cm per year, the life expectancy of the plant is approximately 50 years.

    Folk amulet

Since ancient times in Rus', viburnum was considered a special tree-amulet. A beautiful bush was compared with girlish beauty, female fidelity and a happy family life. No wonder the housewives tried to put several branches of blooming viburnum in each hut. It was believed that its fragrant color attracts love, which means it will increase the husband's attention to his wife. In such a simple way, our great-grandmothers tried to strengthen family ties or improve relations with their spouse after a quarrel.

The guys who were tired of walking in bachelors, clung to the cap a small bunch of ripe viburnum berries, thereby letting girls and young women know that their heart was free for a serious relationship.

Kalina protected the house from the "evil" eye and damage, unkind thoughts and black envy of neighbors. Quite often, it "bloomed" on homespun towels and tablecloths, embroidered by the hostess's caring hand. Such patterned panels were hung in a conspicuous place - in the "red" corner, above the front door, above the windows, as if creating a barrier to enter the house of various evil spirits.

The wedding loaf was also often decorated with viburnum, which symbolized love and harmony. The people correctly noticed, because even the bones of the viburnum berry resemble a heart in shape. And if a girl was noticed in infidelity to her beloved, they tried to hint to him “that his viburnum is fading” or “it’s leaning towards the wrong oak.” The Slavic people are wise, in such sensitive issues, ordinary villagers found a way to react subtly.

    Conclusion

Not everyone likes the specific smell and taste of this berry. Yes, the plant is clearly not for gourmets. But you must admit that the useful and medicinal properties of viburnum, the abundance of treatment recipes and a minimum of contraindications make these fruits truly unique. Remember, dear readers, that the benefits of viburnum for the body are obvious, especially during the season of viruses and colds. Do not pass by bright red berries - try to prepare a prophylactic vitamin drink, and the health of the whole family will be your reward.

    All health!

    With love, Irina Lirnetskaya

The mixture of hydrocarbons energizes the heart. It improves the conductivity of electrical impulses. The force of contractions increases, the vessels dilate, and the pressure decreases.

Phytosterols are also involved in setting up cardiac activity, which do not allow excess cholesterol to be deposited on the walls of blood vessels. The use of an infusion of the bark has a clear anti-atherosclerotic effect. It is prescribed as an antihypertensive (lowering blood pressure) agent for hypertension.

Bones are also an excellent tonic. Hardened drupes are ground into powder. Packed in jars and brewed instead of regular coffee.

Contraindications to the use of viburnum are directly related to its beneficial properties. Hypotension patients are not recommended to frequently use any products prepared from this plant, since viburnum can drastically reduce blood pressure.

It can also be unsafe to ingest for people prone to thrombosis. This is due to the fact that any medicinal elixirs, especially those prepared from the bark, increase blood clotting.
